Some thoughts about Mera: Queen of Atlantis #4

Can Mera escape her past?

Mera has finally returned to Xebel and she will need to confront her old family which don't have the best intentions for this war and her.

This issue delivered even more than I was expecting.

Dan Abnett offers a new chapter where he continues to explore concepts that were ignored for far too long. The way how Xebel is revealed here shows a bigger complexity than how Geoff Johns initially introduced it, a kingdom that is heavily obsessed with power and doesn't trust people outside of it while also showing the different mythos that exist within it.

The characters introduced here are pretty solid. The connection between Ocean Master and Nereus after the end of Johns' Aquaman run is addressed which is satisfying at least and Nereus himself is presented in a more interesting way than before. Other key members of Xebel are also portrayed in intriguing ways while fitting in the whole theme that setting is creating and contributing to the plot in intriguing manners.

Lan Medina handles the art and is really solid thanks to his expressive and detailed characters while the storytelling remains clear.

Good read, hope the next one is even better.
