Some thoughts about Green Arrow #38

Is this the end for Green Arrow?

Oliver is on court for his crimes but he has one last chance, all the people he has helped over his journey.

YES! This is the end! IS OFFICIALLY THE END!

(Or at least I hope so).

I haven't been paying attention to solicits lately so the end of this work came out as a surprise for me. Is no secret that I haven't been a fan of Ben Percy's run on Green Arrow and I have talked enough about that in other columns about why I think it did more harm than good (particularly to Jeff Lemire's run and his desire to build-up a new Green Arrow instead of dwelling in the past) so these can only be good news right?

RIGHT?!

Well, is more complicated than that.

As I've said before, this run has done more harm than good since most of the great creations and reinventions that Lemire did were either ignored or retconned by far worse ideas and I'm afraid that new writers are going to follow this particular run instead of the more creative one. Then again, it all depends on the execution and hopefully new writers will do better here.

Speaking about the issue itself, I thought it was fine. Percy makes everything come back full circle in a decent enough way, at least for all of the ideas he developed (ideas that were as blunt as a brick by the way but I digress). All the mistakes that Ollie has committed in the past have made him learn better and turned him into a better man (which is a quite simplistic way to see the character since he's bound to commit them again based on his history but again, I digress). Not a fan of how Ollie keeps calling himself Social Justice Warrior though, he's not on the Internet for God's sake.

Well, at least the Ninth Circle is finally done and hopefully we won't ever see them again since Lord knows that we have seen way too much from them. Plus, Seattle is back since hopefully Percy realized that literally changing the name to Star City was a pretty cartoony solution.

Oh, and Constantine Drakon appears!... Only to be quickly defeated by Black Canary. Yeah, whatever.

Juan Ferreyra's artwork is great in terms of storytelling once again.

Nothing more to complaint about, maybe in other places. Better luck for the next creative team.

  1. Wish Ed Brubaker was still writing superhero books, love to see his take on GA.

    1. That would be interesting although I would prefer that Lemire came back to give a proper conclusion to his ideas.

Or Garth Ennis, that would be ideal.
