Some thoughts about Mister Miracle #5

Can Mister Miracle escape death again?

Scott has been sentenced to death and now he's going to spend the little time he has left with Big Barda and both will have to realize what's the only way out.

Another issue arrives and is pretty good for the most part.

Tom King continues his story playing with the ramifications of the last chapter with Scott being prepared for his execution. There are really strong scenes in this installment, particularly the ones focusing on the relationship between Barda and Scott. The emotional turmoil that both are feeling because of Scott's upcoming fate is truly believable and makes you be invested in their sake. These moments represent some of the most powerful I've seen this week. The silly appearance of Funky Flashman makes this tragedy contrast in a solid manner.

On the other hand, the story can also be pretty pretentious at times, particularly when it handles the topic of God in a two page segment that tries to sound profound but seems ridiculous and unbelievable for the most part. The dialogue is not exactly natural either.

Mitch Gerards is a master storyteller that elevates the script to quite high levels turning this into one of the most visually impressive reads recently.

Some things worked, others didn't. Still a worthy read though.
